Embodied Storytelling Workshop
Join us on Saturday, April 19th from 1-4PM for an insightful workshop at Second Street Gallery, a partner event of this year's Tom Tom Festival. This workshop is a contribution to the wellness-centered events featured on Saturday, aligning with the festival's theme for the year, "Evolve". The workshop will be led by Darnell Lamont Walker and Yolonda Coles Jones with opening remarks by Kristen Finn.
As part of the Charlottesville Porch Portraits exhibition, running from April-May, this workshop sets a stage where the community can engage, reflect, and create a collective narrative. To reminisce about 2020, a year full of grief, rage, but also, imagination and change, we provide a platform to acknowledge and honour our personal stories and their influence on our existing realities.
The Charlottesville Porch Portraits project, featuring the work of photographers Ézé Amos, Tom Daly, Kristen Finn, John Robinson, and Sarah Cramer Shields, captured 1000 individuals in front of their homes during the height of the COVID-19 quarantine. It served as a reminder of community connection while raising funds that were transformed into small grants for artists and gig workers.
The workshop will start with introductions and intentions, followed by a meditation to immerse into the space. Each participant will explore a specific prompt, sense into it, and write their thoughts or experiences. Attendees are free to share their reflections and the session concludes with a meditative practice reminding us of our connectivity and affirmation that every story matters.
Participants are encouraged to visit the Charlottesville Porch Portraits exhibition at Second Street Gallery before the workshop.
This community event is FREE and open to the public, however, registration is required. REGISTER HERE.
PLEASE NOTE: Seating will be available during the event, but participants are welcome to bring their own pillow, blank, yoga mat, etc. so that they may be comfortable and relaxed during the session.
We look forward to your participation in this meaningful exploration.

First Friday: That Feels Good! Labor as Pleasure + Hannah Diomataris: Sticker Work
Please join Second Street Gallery for December’s First Friday Exhibition Reception on Friday, December 6, 5:30-7:30PM, to meet and speak with the artists. Both of our new exhibitions will remain on view through January 24, 2025.
That Feels Good! Labor as Pleasure explores the works of artists whose obsessive engagement in labor-intensive practices and material exploration is grounded in pleasure. For them, pleasure is both the fruit of their labor and also the framework for engaging with the world. It transcends mere aesthetics, inviting viewers to contemplate the potential for joy and care that is derived from the act of continuous interaction with materials and Labor. The group exhibition curated by New York City-based artist and curator Francisco Donoso will also feature the work of Max Colby, Craftwork (Nicole Yi Messier & Victoria Manganiello), Elvira Clayton, Fidencio Fifield-Perez, John Fifield-Perez, Kathleen Granados, Richard Yu-Tang Lee, Laura Josephine Snyder, and Sarah Boyts Yoder.
This exhibition is generously sponsored by Rose Jean, the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Hannah Diomataris: Sticker Work is a solo exhibition of new work by Richmond-based artist Hannah Diomataris in the Dové Gallery. Diomataris’s work dives deep into nostalgic memory and sentimental material culture, transforming society’s mundane scraps into a tapestry of intricate contemplation. The artist pulls from widely circulated icons of consumer-driven society – items that are customarily used, established obsolete and ultimately discarded – and embarks on a laborious and meditative practice of re-contextualizing unchecked overconsumption.
This exhibition is generously sponsored by Camille Gerrick, Suzanne Tanner-Chitwood, the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Artists in Conversation: Artists featured in "Out of Context"
Join us on Saturday, November 2 at 10:30AM for a special artist talk with exhibiting artists from Out of Context. Moderated by curator and artist Paul Brainard and SSG Executive Director & Chief Curator Kristen Chiacchia, the artist talk will invite dialogue regarding the artists’ unique approach to figural imagery and their intentions for personal, independent interpretations by viewers without any preconceived context.
In addition to Brainard, artists Miriam Carothers, Jean-Pierre Roy, Michael Ryan and Amber Stanton will be part of the conversation. The rich influences of these artist’s proximity to New York combined with each artist’s career path and creative style will provide valuable insight into how this exhibition came together. There will also be a Q & A opportunity at the end of the talk for attendees to join in the conversation.
The talk is free to attend, but space is limited and pre-registration is required.

First Friday: "Out of Context" + Barnaby Whitfield
Join us for First Friday on November 1, 5-7:30PM, as Second Street Gallery hosts a special opening reception with artists from our October/November exhibitions! Both shows will remain on view through November 22, 2024.
Second Street Gallery is pleased and honored to present Out of Context, a group exhibition featuring a selection of work by Paul Brainard, Miriam Carothers, Hyunjin Park, Jean-Pierre Roy, Michael Ryan, and Amber Stanton. Out of Context revolves around the idea that an artwork should have the autonomy to exist and relate to viewers on its own terms, without the interference of descriptive or theoretical text that might shape its interpretation. The exhibition thus emphasizes visual art’s inherent ability to communicate as a unique language. The featured artists in Out of Context express themselves primarily through painting and drawing, placing figurative art within the context of contemporary existence.
Second Street Gallery will also present What’s Coming Is Already On Its Way, a solo exhibition of paintings by New York-based artist, Barnaby Whitfield. Barnaby Whitfield’s masterfully executed oil paintings are an imagined portrait of an American sub culture where queer autonomy is achieved through regenerative agricultural practices. Whitfield utilizes historical painting as motif to present another newly coded language through wary subjects imbued with the beauty of individuality and action — bodies busied by hope and bolstered by acceptance. Portraits of a strength not yet defined by collective consensus.
Out of Context is generously sponsored by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
