Second Street Gallery’s Professional Practices for Artists program is a three-session series designed to support artists at various stages of their careers by providing practical tools, knowledge, and confidence to navigate the professional art world.
This hands-on, practical session covers essential technical skills that help artists present their work professionally and safely. Participants will gain a better understanding of how preparation and presentation impact how work is received by galleries, curators, and jurors.
Topics include:
Photographing artwork for documentation and submissions
Basic lighting and composition tips using accessible tools
Properly attaching hanging hardware
Packing and wrapping artwork for safe transport and storage
Best practices for labeling and inventory
This session will be led by two experienced professionals who bring both creative and practical expertise to the workshop. The photography portion will be taught by Charlotteville-based photographer Stacey Evans. With more than two decades of experience working with artists and galleries to document individual artworks and entire exhibitions, Evans is passionate about helping creators present their work in its best light through approachable, professional photography techniques.
The second part of the session will be led by Justin Brown of ARTWORKrs, an organization dedicated to supporting artists with the tools and knowledge they need to prepare their work for exhibition and transport. Brown has guided countless artists through the process of properly packing, protecting, and installing their pieces, helping them avoid common pitfalls while ensuring their work arrives on site safely and display-ready. Together, Evans and Brown provide a well-rounded learning experience designed to give participants both the visual and logistical skills needed to present their work with confidence.
The workshop is available at $40 SSG members / $50 non-members. This program is designed for emerging and mid-career artists seeking to strengthen their professional practice, though artists at all stages are welcome.
This is an in-person workshop held at Second Street Gallery.
