Upcoming Events & Programming
Family Studio Day: December
Join us on December 13, 10am - 2pm, for the last Family Studio Day of the year!
The Main Gallery walls will be adorned with scenes from exhibiting artist Stacey Evans' travels on Amtrak’s Northeast Regional line and the route between Charlottesville, Virginia, and New York City. The photographs in Passenger: Riding the Rails capture the American landscape in snapshots that appear both common and unusual.
We encourage you to create your own train-inspired collage based on Evans' photos and ongoing collage practice. Choose your own track to make art about the train itself or the views you might see as you go on a creative journey. The artist will be in the gallery to offer an extra boost of inspiration.
All supplies for this project will be provided. We hope you'll bring your fellow travel companions and future adventurers to join in on the fun!
Thank you to CEP Solar (Commonwealth Energy Partners) for sponsoring this event!
Family Studio Day: January
Join us on January 10, 10am-2pm, for the first Family Studio Day of 2026! The featured project will be reflective of the photographs on view in Possibility, a solo exhibition of works by Courtney Coker. Prompted by the domestic spaces she’s captured inside an uninhabited home, we’ll “rewild” our own tiny houses with natural elements such as moss and sticks. Plenty of other supplies will be available for extra embellishment. You can always step outside to gather your own bits of nature if you want to add a more personal flare! Markers, crayons, stickers, etc. will also be available in case you’d like to go in a different direction.
Every Family Studio Day is a free event appropriate for everyone at every age. Come take advantage of this opportunity and spend time with other creative community members in the gallery.

First Friday: Stacey Evans + Courtney Coker
Second Street Gallery is pleased to celebrate the opening of two new exhibitions on December 5, 5:00PM-7:30PM, as part of First Fridays.
In the Main Gallery, Passenger: Riding the Rails presents an expansive collection of photographic works by Charlottesville-based artist Stacey Evans. Images selected for this exhibition depict Evans’ travels as a passenger on Amtrak’s Northeast Regional line and the route between Charlottesville, Virginia, and New York City, highlighting the transitions between urban and rural landscapes.
Possibility, Courtney Coker’s solo exhibition in the Dové Gallery, features vivid imagery documenting a once-thriving farmhouse in rural Virginia. Coker’s images document the house's decay and the rewilding process as nature reclaims its space, serving as a metaphorical expression of the artist's personal journey of self-discovery and transformation.
Passenger: Riding the Rails is generously sponsored by The Farmly Fund, Pamela Friedman and Ronald Bailey, Rocket, Lisa M. Draine, Jaszi Butler PLLC, Crutchfield, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts, with support from an anonymous sponsor.

Family Studio Day: November
Join us for November’s Family Studio Day on Saturday, November 15, 10AM-2PM, to try your hand at making cyanotypes (aka sunprints)! Exhibiting artist Zofie King incorporates this technique into her mixed media works to stunning effect, and Zofie will be in the gallery to demonstrate and teach us about this long-used process! That artist’s exhibition, What Remains, is currently on view and will help spark everyone’s creativity
Want to plan ahead? Bring in some of your favorite natural materials (leaves, flowers, feathers) or small trinkets to experiment with.
