Second Street Gallery is pleased to present an interdisciplinary exhibition of new works by Charlottesville, VA-based artist Ryan Trott, on view in the Main Gallery from February 6–March 20, 2026. The exhibition will open to the public on Friday, February 6 at 11AM, with a special First Friday Opening Reception with the artist from 5:00–7:30PM.
Containing colorful paintings and papier-mâché sculptures—each paired with a musical soundtrack composed and recorded by the artist—Mixed Bag invites viewers to inhabit an immersive world of exaggerated characters and everyday objects placed within a dreamlike environment. By uniting visual works with sonic elements, Trott offers an opportunity for visitors to explore how sound impacts and enhances our understanding of the physical world, while inviting them to create their own narrative associations within and between the artworks.
This exhibition is a Season 52 Call for Submissions pick. Mixed Bag is generously sponsored by the Pontillo-Galdencio Family, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Ryan Trott is an elementary art educator, visual artist, and musician based in Charlottesville, Virginia. His visual work explores everyday objects, people, and plants interacting in lighthearted, dreamlike scenes of bright color. His drawings, paintings, and murals are inspired by children’s art, editorial illustrations, and outsider and folk art. The aim is that this work is both accessible to everyone, and surreal enough to invite interpretation. He finds great joy in creating art and music, and hopes to encourage creative openness with his students, viewers, and listeners.
Trott has shown work locally at The Bridge PAI, Infinite Repeats, Quirk Gallery’s Pink Gallery, and Welcome Gallery. His large-scale murals can be seen at Common House social club (Charlottesville and Richmond, VA), The Tenth Street Warehouses, and Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital (both Charlottesville, VA). His illustrations have been published by SZ Familie magazine, and he has self-published and released several book projects and recorded music through his labels Everybody Books and Later Now Recordings.

Artist Statement
Mixed Bag is a collection of new paintings and papier-mâché sculptures by Ryan Trott, with a musical soundtrack created in tandem by the artist. The work depicts everyday objects, faces, and figures in surreal, lighthearted environments. Woozy fruit bowls, clouds, vases, and musical instruments interact in playful paintings alongside papier-mâché sculptures of exaggerated real life objects in bright, flat color. These whimsical scenes share common themes: the joy of creativity, the comfort of simple spaces, meditating on the everyday. Trott’s visual vocabulary is informed by outsider and folk art, children’s book illustrations, and the warped absurdity of Funk Art. Coffee mugs, potted plants, food, bricks, and terrazzo appear in different forms throughout the work, emphasizing the visual comfort of these simple settings.
Alongside the visual work is a collection of free-flowing musical compositions. Individual paintings are paired with an accompanying song, in varying styles and instrumentation, immersing the viewer in the dreamlike, narrative world of the art. Recorded at home on guitar, synthesizer, drum machine, and percussion through a myriad of effects, the music touches on references to early electronic film soundtracks, ambient, exotica, and library music.
