We invite you to join us for the First Friday opening reception of two new exhibitions on Friday, April 3, 5:00-7:30PM! Fine Art + Flowers and Field Obscura will remain on view through May 22. Exhibiting artists will be in the gallery to greet and mingle with our guests.
Fine Art + Flowers, a curated exhibition of botanical paintings by seven celebrated women artists, all of whom live in Central Virginia or maintain strong ties to the region. Featuring paintings by Karen Blair, Lee Christmas Halstead, Berkeley Hoerr, Krista Townsend, Priscilla Whitlock, Laura Wooten, and Cate West Zahl, the exhibition presents a diverse spectrum of styles and compositions. From intimate studies of individual blossoms to lush and expansive arrangements, each artist offers a distinct interpretation of botanical subject matter. During the exhibition’s opening weekend, visitors will be immersed in an extraordinary display of floral artistry as the gallery is transformed by an array of flower arrangements created by florists, floral designers, and creative talents who share a deep appreciation for Virginia’s natural splendor.
In the Dové Gallery, Giselle Gautreau’s Field Obscura explores the convergence of memory, landscape, and ecology through layers of oil or encaustic paints, as well as charcoal and graphite drawings. Through this body of work, the artist aims to capture atmospheric subtleties that suggest depth and luminosity. Gautreau’s recent series include depictions of changing coastlines, migratory bird patterns, and imagery of maps in the context of the gradual acceptance of environmental change as the new normal, connecting viewers to the fleeting and enduring aspects of nature.
