First Friday: Francisco Donoso + Meesha Goldberg

On Friday, April 1, 2022, Second Street Gallery celebrated the opening evening of two solo exhibitions: Francisco Donoso’s Pathways in the Main Gallery and Meesha Goldberg’s Daughterland in the Dové Gallery. The exhibiting artists were present throughout the evening to chat with visitors.

Francisco Donoso’s Pathways in the Main Gallery explores playful and vibrant deconstructions of the chain-link fence architecture to invite the viewer to consider the precariousness of place and belonging. As an undocumented Ecuadorian-American immigrant, Donoso reclaims power by re-imagining borders and transforming them into spaces, places and moments of play, care, possibility and opportunity, in order to subvert fences as symbols and architectures of violence, dislocation, and trauma. Ebbing and flowing through color and surreal abstraction, Pathways makes room for competing forces of familiarity and illegibility to coexist, suggesting the multivalence and density of the immigrant experience.

Meesha Goldberg’s Daughterland in the Dové Gallery experiments with how one can create spiritual kinship with the Earth despite dislocation from the waters and cultures of a motherland. Born of a Korean mother who married an occupying American soldier, Goldberg rejects nationalism and declares her body the Daughterland, a sacred site from where to deepen relationships with the sources of life. Goldberg uses film, performance, painting, and poetry to ritually process the grief of a multiplicity of matrilineal wounds and express a nuanced land ethic of belonging.

Both exhibitions were made possible in part by a grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

Pathways was on view from April 1 - May 27, 2022. Daughterland was on view from April 1 - 29, 2022. Learn more about the exhibitions on our website (www.secondstreetgallery.org).
