Second Street Gallery is pleased to present The Third Mind, held in SSG’s Dové Gallery space December 3, 2021 - January 22, 2022.

Taking its title from Keith Haring’s 1988 essay, “Painting the Third Mind,” about the artistic collaboration and friendship between Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, this exhibition paired artists and asked them to step outside of their comfort zones to create a single painting together for exhibition at Second Street Gallery.

As Haring wrote, “For an artist, the most important and delicate relationship he can have with another artist is one in which he is constantly challenged and intimidated. This is probably the only productive quality of jealousy. The greatest pleasure is to be provoked to the point of inspiration.” For The Third Mind, Second Street Gallery encourages planning, conversation, compromise, and a willingness to be challenged.

Artist pairs participating in The Third Mind include: Erika Chu & Andrea Ruedy Trimble, Zoé Edgecomb & Lisa Macchi, Brittany Fan & Ryan Trott, Diana Hale & Priscilla Whitlock, Lou Haney & Tobiah Mundt, Chris Haske & Steve Haske, Kweisi Morris & Andrew Sherogan, Joan H. Ranzini & Susan Crave Rosen, Valencia Robin & Sarah Boyts Yoder, Benford D. Stellmacher & Derrick J. Waller, and Laura Josephine Snyder & Kathryn Wingate. Artists were selected from a free, open call for submissions and paired by SSG’s Executive Director & Chief Curator, Kristen Chiacchia. Artist pairs began collaborating on their joint painting in summer 2021 using a 36 x 36 inch canvas supplied by the gallery.
