Ramona Martinez (she/her) is a visual artist, writer, and musician whose work is driven by her desire to channel heavenly transmissions. Through her iconography, Martinez hopes to reclaim Christianity for misfits, radicals, anarchists, and outcasts of all types. Through the example of her life, she hopes to demonstrate that it’s possible to be devout and not dogmatic.

A self-taught printmaker, Martinez enjoys pushing linoleum to the absolute limit when it comes to holding fine detail. Her work is often stark & highly-contrasted, informed by the emotional drama of German and Mexican printmaking from the early 20th-century. Martinez’s work has been featured in several group exhibitions, most notably at Second Street Gallery and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art.

Martinez lives and works in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she is deeply invested in the arts community as a participant and organizer, volunteering her time as a board member at The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative and serving as co-director of Bad Milk Press. In 2020, Martinez and fellow artist Sri Kodakalla launched MALA LECHE, a radical art zine which features the art and writing of women, non-binary, and genderqueer artists & writers from Central Virginia. This ongoing publication financially supports local artists through contributor and guest editor stipends, while releasing new issues every few months.

Martinez writes and performs original Honky Tonk music with her band, Ramona & the Holy Smokes. She credits a group of Honky Tonk Angels for helping her write nearly 30 songs since July of 2021.

Exhibition Statement (courtesy of the artist):

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
Mother of God,
Mother of All,
Friend to the outcast,
Provider and Champion.
O Courage incarnate,
You offered yourself to something greater,
And gave birth to a religion.
You sang praises to a just God,
Who struck down the mighty,
And lifted up the lowly.
You saw your son tortured by the state
And stood by as witness,
Unceasing in your love.
You would never have us forget
Those Goddesses erased,
The other Holy Mothers
Whose sons were also killed,
Whose image you replaced.
Yet you still stand in witness
O paragon of strength,
The prayer of justice still on your lips --
May we never give up hope,
May we love without ceasing,
Through birth, through death,
And through the world to come,
Amen

The Holy Mother has many names and has appeared to believers and non-believers around the world for centuries. The number of ‘Marian apparitions’ continues to increase as the world faces new and seemingly insurmountable challenges, yet her message is always the same: “If you only knew how much I love you…”

This exhibition is an invitation for every visitor, regardless of faith, to sit with the love of the Virgin Mary and find refuge and acceptance in her many forms. While St. Peter may guard the front gates of Heaven, Mary lets everyone in through the back door.
