A Cascade of Kudzu, 2026

Second Street Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition blending timeless artistic traditions with contemporary concerns by Charlottesville, VA-based artist Giselle Gautreau, on view in the Dové Gallery from April 3–May 22, 2026. The exhibition will open to the public on Friday, April 3 at 11AM, with a special First Friday Opening Reception with the artist from 5:00–7:30PM..

Exploring the convergence of memory, landscape, and ecology through layers of oil or encaustic paints, as well as charcoal and graphite drawings, the artist aims to capture atmospheric subtleties that suggest depth and luminosity. Gautreau’s recent series include depictions of changing coastlines, migratory bird patterns, and imagery of maps in the context of the gradual acceptance of environmental change as the new normal, provoking contemplation and fostering a renewed appreciation for the fragile beauty of our world, connecting viewers to the fleeting and enduring aspects of nature.

This exhibition is a Season 52 Call for Submissions pick. Field Obscura is generously sponsored by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Giselle Gautreau is a painter whose work explores the relationship between landscape, memory, and perception. Drawing from close observation of the natural environment, her paintings move between clarity and obscurity, capturing fleeting moments of light, atmosphere, and place.

Working primarily in oil and encaustic, Gautreau’s paintings reflect an interest in how landscapes are remembered as much as they are seen.

Her work has been exhibited in galleries and exhibitions throughout the United States and is held in public and private collections internationally.

Gautreau lives and works in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she maintains a studio at McGuffey Art Center. She is an artist and educator and holds a BFA from Maine College of Art & Design and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Artist Statement

This collection of paintings and drawings explore the space between observed landscape and remembered place.

The work moves between clarity and obscurity. Wildflowers appear in soft focus. Kudzu gathers into dense green tangles. A sky is framed by branches, as if seen from the ground looking up. Other scenes blur like a passing view from a car or train window. Some works lean toward painterly realism, while others dissolve into atmosphere. Together they consider the space between what is clearly seen and what is only partially remembered.

Much of the work begins with observation of the Virginia landscape: its vines, meadows, and shifting light. At the same time, memories of my New England roots surface, including time spent in my mother’s Vermont garden. These places overlap in the mind. Geography changes, but the emotional imprint remains.

Drawing and painting allow me to return to these moments. Drawing feels immediate and responsive. Painting unfolds more slowly through layers of oil and encaustic, where each stage invites reconsideration: what to sharpen, what to soften, what to let fade.

Like memory itself, the image shifts over time. Certain details come forward while others recede.
