Second Street Gallery is pleased to present TORN, a new exhibition in the Dové Gallery featuring the work of WAXenVINE.

WAXenVINE is the collective vision of husband and wife team, photographer Scott Irvine and artist Kim Meinelt. Their work centers on themes of light, shadow, texture, and beauty. WAXenVINE seeks the unusual within the mundane and beauty in unexpected places by layering and blending multiple images together, resulting in a hauntingly poetic dreamscape that transcends reality and the singular imagery. The result is a simultaneously romantic and unsettling experience.

In their new exhibition, TORN, WAXenVINE explores a modern portrayal of women. While in the history of art, the female figure has often traditionally been the focus or muse, TORN explores women who, at first glance, transmit serenity, but under further consideration give off a tense, almost troubled feeling. The women WAXenVINE portrays have unique senses of themselves, lending themselves to being more open and experimental by tuning into a non-conventional beauty.

WAXenVINE is Scott Irvine and Kim Meinelt. Scott Irvine lives and works as a photographer in Brooklyn, NY, using vintage film cameras and digital as well as traditional techniques in the black and white darkroom that he manages. He holds a BFA in photography and has exhibited internationally. Kim Meinelt studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts with a focus on Scenic Design and Set Painting. She works as a freelance sculptor, painter, and interior designer in NYC. More of WAXenVINE’s work can be seen at waxenvine.com or on Instagram: @scottirvine57 and @kimmibird.

A reception for the exhibition was held on First Friday at Second Street Gallery December 7, 2018, from 5:30-7:30pm. The artists traveled to Charlottesville for a special reception and artist talk in the gallery on Friday, January 11, 2019 ay 6pm.
