Second Street Gallery is pleased to present Tales of Min'Umbra, a solo shadow art exhibition for all ages, created by artist and puppeteer Tania L. Yager of Twisted Heart Puppetworks.

The exhibition will be held in the Dové Gallery of Second Street Gallery from October 6 - November 17, 2023. As part of the exhibition’s opening weekend, Tania L. Yager will presented two performances of The Changeling, a one-woman piece of shadow theater set in old Ireland. Visit our calendar’s Past Events and Programming section for more details.

This exhibition is generously sponsored by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Tales of Min’Umbra are stories from a world of shadow and light, where ancestral folk tales and dangerous characters are illuminated and allowed to dance in our imagination. Ghostly horses, dancing devils, and impish sprites perilously abound in miniature. Min’Umbra is a place only accessed when seasons turn dark, the night is long, and the liminal spaces are revealed. This is where spirits fly, magic is real, and the old world comes through in diminutive but haunting silhouettes. Where is Min’Umbra? It can be found in the time between first witches’ moon and the last burning embers of the dying Yule log. Hope, generosity, and gratitude can be uncovered in the darkest of places… if only one knows how to pull back the shadows.
