Second Street Gallery is pleased to present a selection of new works by Charlottesville, Virginia-based interdisciplinary artist Andrew Sherogan, on view in the Dové Gallery from September 5—26, 2025.

Sherogan’s landscape works celebrate the beauty, power, and tranquility of nature. His aim is to create a type of familiarity or emotional connection with each scene, even as the majority of the works depict imaginary locations. Sherogan’s exhibition continues to build on themes of meditation and the metaphorical parallels of the human journey and symbolism as related to the  natural world.

The artist was selected as part of Teeny Tiny Trifecta 7’s Curator’s Choice Exhibition Pick. Sanctuaries is generously sponsored by Whit and Emily Douglas, Andrew and Tyler Greeley, Journey Group, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Andrew Sherogan is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and maker based in Charlottesville, Virginia. Much of what has shaped his experience as an artist is a profound sense of curiosity and a passion for the natural world, natural materials, and the landscapes they exist in.

Originally from New York, his early experiences in the Hudson Valley and art making led him to pursue a degree in Graphic Design from SUNY New Paltz with a minor in Printmaking. Upon moving to Virginia twenty-four years ago, he set his sights on K-12 Art Education. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University, leading to two Artist in residencies at local high schools and fourteen years of classroom teaching at both the elementary and high school level. In this capacity, he fulfilled his love of service to the community while working to create a formative, playful, and nurturing environment for his Art students.

Statement from the artist:

My work begins with fragments—scraps of paper, craggy edges, worn textures, and abstract images—each bearing its own history. Individually each scrap is perfectly imperfect, but with a destiny that through the process of collage, will merge together to create an image. In the quiet act of arranging these fragments, I find a kind of meditation. I slow down, observe, listen to my instincts, and reflect, allowing the elements and character of each piece to guide me. The act becomes less about construction and more about communion.

Through Sanctuaries, I hope to offer spaces—imagined but physical—where viewers can pause, breathe, and see themselves in the layered wholeness of the work, recognizing that our imperfections are not the opposite of completeness, but its very foundation. We are all layered from remnants of our histories, shaped by moments we chose and moments that chose us. Like scraps of paper, we carry creases, tears, and stains, yet these marks do not diminish us—they form the architecture of who we are. Each of us is an assembled whole, stitched together from mismatched parts.
