Navigation Series

Alonzo Davis

April 7, 2017 – April 28, 2017

Inspired by Micronesian navigation stick charts, the works in Navigation Series incorporate the Alonzo Davis’s current practice of combining natural materials such as bamboo and rawhide with technology-reliant components like LED lights.

Davis states that his concept for the series “combines ancient ways of charting to new high-tech satellite based navigation, known as GPS.” The work serves as “a reminder of how we navigate through the changes being brought about in 2017.”

Alonzo Davis’s artistic career spans over four decades. During the ‘70s and early ‘80s, Davis’s involvement in the California mural movement culminated with the 1984 Olympic Murals project.  His Eye on ’84 (which has recently been restored) is one of ten displayed on the downtown Harbor Freeway in Los Angeles. A resident of Maryland for the past five years, Davis most recently completed a permanent installation for the U.S. Embassy in Togo, West Africa.
