Encaustic 101: Essentials and Mixed Media Lab with Giselle Gautreau
October 6th, 10 AM - 1 PM
Come learn the ancient art of encaustic painting, with a contemporary approach! This workshop covers the important essentials and a great introduction to encaustic painting.
Participants will learn a bit about the history, safety, materials and tools used with this unique and versatile medium. You’ll learn how to prepare a surface as well as approaches of painting, fusing and carving the layers of pigmented wax. This workshop will go beyond the basic first steps and introduce approaches on how to use encaustic wax with mixed media. This includes collage, stenciling, mixed media and image transfers.
Students come away with having an opportunity to create up to 3 6x6” paintings of their own, as well as receiving a hand-out with resources that includes tips on setting up their own encaustic studio.
Workshop fee includes all materials, supports, and use of equipment.
Encaustic 102: Kristie Woods
October 13th, 10 AM - 1 PM
The class with Kristie Wood is for students who have taken a previous encaustic workshop. The 102 class will explore advanced techniques used in the encaustic process and have more hands-on time, less discussion.
This is your chance to expand your knowledge of encaustic painting! Also known as "hot wax painting," this technique applies layers of wax onto the canvas, often creating a soft and eerie effect.
During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to create your own encaustic piece to take home with you.
Various objects will be available for experimentation, such as photos, feather, string, etc., but feel free to bring your own! All other supplies will be provided. Space is limited. This for students 16 and up.
