VMFA Visual Arts Fellowship Talk
POSTED ON 9.17.2014
Second Street Gallery will host a one-session informational talk entitled “How to Apply for a VMFA Visual Arts Fellowship” on Friday, October 10th at 3:30 pm in the gallery.
The talk will be given by Jenny Harding, VMFA’s Fellowship Program Coordinator. Harding will introduce attendees to VMFA’s Visual Arts Fellowship Program, providing a history of this wonderful resource for Virginia’s artists and art students and explain how artists can apply for funding. Three of the artists exhibiting at Second Street Gallery in October as part of the You Are Surrounded exhibition – Heide Trepanier, Warren Craghead, and Sarah Boyts Yoder - have all received VMFA Fellowship awards.
This event is free and open to artists, educators, students, and gallery members. Please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org or call 434.977.7284 for further information.
The Fellowship program was the vision of the late John Lee Pratt of Fredericksburg, Virginia; offered through VMFA’s Art & Education Division, Fellowships are still largely funded by Pratt’s generous endowment, and supplemented by annual gifts from the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation and the J. Warwick McClintic Jr. Scholarship Fund. Since its creation in 1940, the Fellowship program has awarded almost $5 million to over 1,200 Virginians. In this information session, attendees will learn the ‘ins and outs’ of the application process, how to ensure application materials are complete, and the history behind the program and some of the familiar names who have received awards in the past. The application deadline is Friday, November 7, 2014 – applications are currently online at www.VMFA.museum/fellowships.
Jenny Harding earned a BFA in Fashion Design from Virginia Commonwealth University. She currently serves as Fellowship Program Coordinator at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. For additional information, telephone Jenny at 804.204.2685.

Recent Outreach with Avery Lawrence
POSTED ON 7.15.2014
Visiting exhibition artist, Avery Lawrence recently led some fun outreach workshops with the Southwood Boys and Girls Club and the Reflections Summer Regional Governor's School. Part of Avery's exhibit included a performance piece; dressed in an inflatable polar bear costume, Avery visited the Boys and Girls Club and led follow-the-leader and Q&A sessions. The Reflections Summer Regional Governor's School visited Second Street Gallery and explored the 'can't shake it' exhibit. The students skyped with Avery on a gallery wall and he led a presentation on creating gifs. The students then went to the Freedom of Speech Wall and created animated gifs of their own. Thank you to Avery and to our outreach sponsors! Check out the student's gifs here and some other images from the outreach sessions below.
