Kristie Wood

March 2, 2018 – March 23, 2018

Second Street Gallery is pleased to present a new exhibition in the Backroom Gallery featuring the work of Kristie Wood. The exhibition opens on First Friday, March 2, 2018 from 5:30-7:30pm. Second Street Gallery will be hosting an Encaustic Workshop lead by Wood on Saturday, March 24 from 10 am-2pm.

The exhibition is a collection of Wood’s encaustic works, a technique that involves the use of hot-pigmented wax. While Wood has used many different techniques throughout her artistic career, she fell in love with encaustic immediately, recognizing its versatility of use with other mediums. In this exhibition, Wood combines encaustic with photography and collage. Much of her work is based in landscape, using photographs taken by Wood of the surrounding Charlottesville area. The layers of translucent wax lend themselves to a dream-like quality, which, in Wood’s words, preserves the “calm and stillness of changing light on the landscape”. Beyond her own photography, Wood also makes use of vintage photographs in this collection, playing on the changing perspectives one experiences when developing a negative.

This season Second Street Gallery launched a new program to give local artists additional opportunities to showcase their work in the gallery.

Each month, Second Street Gallery will spotlight a different artist in The Backroom @SSG. Executive Director and Chief Curator Kristen Chiacchia brings the New York City art world practice of exhibiting art in a carefully curated back room to Charlottesville.
