Supercluster Arion and other Phenomena

DM Witman

October 4, 2013 – October 26, 2013

Deanna Witman’s new work may look like images of nebulae and galaxies, but they are in fact the product of the common slug (or, Arion subfuscus, to give it its proper name). In this body of work, which makes it’s exhibition debut at SSG, slugs move about from dusk until dawn on gelatin silver paper in Deanna’s darkroom, making marks through their biology, creating something new. These images exist as microcosms of the cycles of life: feeding, defecation, sex, and movement. Each print is unique and made on archival treated silver gelatin paper.

Deanna is an artist living and working on the coast of Maine. She is a native of Pennsylvania. She holds an M.F.A. in Photography from Maine Media College and a B.S. in Environmental Biology from Kutztown University.

SUPERCLUSTER ARION AND OTHER PHENOMENA by DM Witman will be on view in the Dové Gallery from October 4 – October 26, 2013.
