Maps Planes and Water Marks
February 5, 2016 – February 26, 2016
Amie Oliver’s paintings and drawings catalog the passage of time and the subtle, but profound impact of entropy and the elements on the material world. She considers her art to be like a long and winding river with enough momentum to carry everything in its path to the sea. The series of works featured in “Maps, Planes and Water Marks” move along the spectrum from transparent to opaque. They are unpredictable, lyrical, transportative and stubborn. They all explore drawing and painting with ink on water resistant paper.
Oliver has taught painting, drawing and mixed media at Virginia Commonwealth University, Longwood College, Mississippi State University, and the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, among others. She holds a BA from Mississippi State University, and an MFA from Bowling Green State University. Oliver’s art has been in over 100 solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Europe, China, South Korea, Tibet and Australia. She has received numerous fellowships and her art is in numerous collections including the Try-Me Collection, the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, Capital One, Media General, MCV, VCCA, and the Oberpfalzer Kunstlerhaus. She serves on numerous boards, including 1708 Gallery and the Fellows Council of VCCA. Oliver’s studio is The Art Lab @ 2216 Hull St in Richmond, Virginia.
