PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Second Streets annual schedule of shows is designed to encapsulate
and engage developments and dialogues at play in contemporary art.
It seeks to balance compelling works by important local regional artists
with works by national leading-edge artists. Following its mission,
Second Street strives to contextualize this new work through publications
and programming, all which seek to bring the audience into a place
of engagement and questioning.
Second Street's exhibitions are selected from a slate of submissions
from living artists throughout the United States, as well as through
research and planning by SSG's director, who ultimately curates the
fall exhibition season. Over a dozen outreach and education programs-ranging
from support services for artists, to lunch-hour seminars on current
art issues and criticality, to hands-on workshops in area schools-are
designed to deepen the public's enjoyment and understanding of exhibits
and to make the best of contemporary art more accessible to SSG's
community.
Key to access to new art is educational programming, centered on the
living artist. For SSG this is most effective if it connects audience
with artists through artmaking or personal encounters. Since 2000,
SSG contextualizes its exhibitions through diverse educational offerings.
Today, these include nine distinct programs, two of which encompass
nine artist-led workshops and 22-25 artist talks annually.
A growing sector of SSG's programs is outreach, where artists visit
local and regional schools to connect directly with students. Most
recent is the creation of a Public Art Project, which seeks to engage
the community through art projects in public spaces. |
