MISSION
Second Street Gallery (SSG), Central Virginia’s first artist run alternative art space, is one of the longest surviving nonprofit organizations in the country focused solely on the art and ideas of our time.

SSG’s primary mission is to enliven Virginia through access to the best in contemporary art and artists and to inspire new ways of thinking, seeing, and doing.

HISTORY
Founded in 1973, Second Street Gallery is the oldest nonprofit (501 (c) 3) contemporary art space in Central Virginia and one of the oldest in the country. Established by a group of ten artists affiliated with the University of Virginia and the local community...

Estimated yearly attendance at Second Street Gallery is around 15,000 (5,000 at 11 public openings, 350 at outreach events, 350 at special events, 9,000 general visitors on average).

SSG presents an annual exhibition season of 12-14 shows in 8 slots, either as whole space exhibitions in two galleries or two simultaneous shows, on view for one to two month periods...

The Gallery's dozen exhibitions per year are selected from a slate of submissions from living artists throughout the United States. Second Street Gallery is located inside the City Center for Contemporary Arts, a multi-use facility built in 2003. Designed by Bushman-Dreyfus Architects, based in Charlottesville, with R.E. Lee as general contractor, the C3A houses three nonprofit organizations...
